Biography

Simon Topp is a passionate advocate for those, like him, trying to live and work in a system that is getting more expensive and more precarious every day. He is standing with Jagmeet Singh to build a recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic that benefits us all, as well as bold climate action that creates fair-paid, green jobs.
When Simon left home to study at York University’s Glendon Campus, he had to work to make ends meet. This brought him to warehouses, fast-food kitchens, and offices. His experience in the workforce has showed him what can be accomplished when workplaces treat their employees with respect, as well as the pain caused when they do not.
Moving from job to job, seeing many of his peers struggling in the gig economy, Simon was driven to join the NDP in search of a better way forward. Becoming president of the Glendon NDP, Simon joined the fight to bring in the Canada Emergency Student Benefit. Working with the Student Union, he also helped make sure students knew their rights during the pandemic.
Simon grew up in Toronto, where he attended his local public French immersion school and quickly developed a passion for history and theater. He works at Glendon, helping people improve their language skills in both English and French. One of Simon’s main roles there is to lead discussion groups on politics, identity, and the challenges facing young people.
