Biography

Laura Gillanders is a hard-working advocate who successfully campaigned to save some of British Columbia’s highly productive farmland. She is CFO of a construction company, and an urban farmer who balances the demands of motherhood and work.

Laura has championed important community initiatives — defending Richmond schools that were slated for closure in 2016, and creating an online forum to follow the Mount Polley mine tailings pond failure in 2014. This important forum allowed mining professionals, First Nations, and others to come together to discuss mine tailings safety.

As the spokesperson for Richmond FarmWatch, a grassroots group seeking to stop the proliferation of non-farming mega mansions on protected agricultural lands, Laura’s leadership resulted in bylaw and legislated house size limits on farmland in Richmond and throughout B.C.

Laura is running with the Greens because her top priority is healthy, thriving communities and natural environments. This means affordable housing for all, support for mental health and addictions, and an economic policy that boldly addresses the climate crisis while helping businesses and people.

Laura is known for her inclusive problem-solving abilities and collaborative decision-making skills. She currently chairs the City of Richmond Food Security and Agricultural Advisory Committee. Laura lives in Richmond with her family of six
