Biography

Janet Routledge is a life-long community activist who has been deeply involved in the labour movement, the women’s movement, and the environmental movement. Janet’s environmental advocacy led to her being granted Commentor status before the National Energy Board to oppose the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion. Janet continues to oppose this project.

Janet was first elected to the BC Legislature in 2017 to represent the riding of Burnaby North. After her election she served as Deputy Government Whip and Chair of the Government Women’s Caucus. She also represented BC on the steering committee of the Canadian Region of Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians.

As the MLA for Burnaby North, Janet has spoken out in the Legislature against White privilege and in favour of a woman’s rights. She has also advocated for proactive government policies that directly address systemic inequalities in the economy that tend to favour the already wealthy. She served on the Childcare Working Group and is proud that she played a role in laying the groundwork for a universal, affordable, accessible childcare program.

Janet has lived in Burnaby North for more than 20 years. She lives in a multigenerational household in the Heights with her husband, her son and daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren.

Janet’s personal motto is "Democracy is not a Spectator Sport." She works to invite and encourage voters out of the bleachers and onto the playing field.
