George Affleck is a veteran of Vancouver politics, having served two terms as a Vancouver City Councillor. As someone who has run his business in Vancouver-Fairview for more than a decade, and with two of his children spending their school years closely tied to the riding, he is now focused and determined to be the voice in Victoria for its residents and to ensure those residents and businesses can thrive, feel safe, and get the support and representation they deserve.
George was first elected in 2011 and was re-elected in 2014. During his time at City Hall, he became known for fiscal responsibility, transparency, and accountability, holding the Vision-dominated council’s feet to the fire. He demanded that the citizens of Vancouver be kept better informed about where their elected representatives were spending their tax dollars, and why. He challenged expectations at times – not voting for every single development like many of his fellow councillors, but instead fighting for families to stay in the city, for affordability, liveability, and for the heritage of the neighbourhoods within the city limits.
In 2018, George chose not to run for council again, instead focusing on his marketing agency, Curve Communications, where he is Founder and CEO. In the past 20 years, Curve has worked in both the private and non-profit sectors, with clients in healthcare, education, manufacturing, retail, hospitality, and the environment. He has served as a Chair of the Board for the Vancouver International Comedy Festival, a director of the Vancouver International Children’s Festival, a Chair of the False Creek Elementary PAC, and a Chair of the Board of Vancouver’s first car co-op, Modo. He is a published author of two books and is a former CBC journalist.
George was born and raised here and is an SFU graduate. He and his family of five are grateful to continue to live in Vancouver.
Of this opportunity to run in Vancouver-Fairview, he says: "While I don’t believe in the NDP’s right to call this election, I believe it’s the right of the people of Vancouver-Fairview to reject their current MLA, who has not done enough for residents and businesses during his minimal time in Victoria. If people put their trust in me and elect me as their MLA, they can rest assured that I will work tirelessly to improve standards of living – which have deteriorated visibly in the past three years – for ALL residents. I will be a loud and proud voice for local entrepreneurs, business owners, and workers who have suffered more than they should have during this pandemic, and I will be a visible member of this community, taking their concerns on board, listening to them, and then most importantly, getting things done on their behalf."
